Vast areas across the Kimberley, Carnarvon, Mid-West and even the Southwest wine region contain unconventional gas targeted by the fracking industry.
The Department of Mines and Petroleum (DMP) is handing out exploration licenses to gas companies so they can frack through precious groundwater sources, including the Yarragadee North and South aquifers that supply Perth and the Southwest with drinking water.
The increasingly strong evidence from peer-reviewed science is clear: fracking pollutes drinking water, harms health and damages sustainable industries like farming and tourism. It has the potential to tear communities apart and massively increase Western Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
As with most resources projects, multinational companies benefit most from fracking, with jobs and profits largely heading offshore.
Frack Free Future is an alliance of communities and organisations campaigning together to stop fracking and unconventional gas in Western Australia. We believe in a healthy and sustainable future, where we move beyond the damaging boom-bust cycles of the resources industry.
The Government of Victoria has permanently banned fracking and unconventional gas, whilst the Northern Territory has joined Tasmaniain instigating a moratorium on fracking, with a possible ban ahead. Numerous national, state and regional governments overseas have enacted bans or moratoriums.
We’re leading the call for Western Australia to do the same. With the WA State Election just months away, it’s time our political and corporate leaders joined us in calling for a Frack Free Future.
